As an organization that works with wounded veterans, we were particularly involved in finding meaningful ways for our members to mark Yom HaZikaron, Memorial Day for the Fallen Soldiers of the Wars of Israel and Victims of Actions of Terrorism, during the national lockdown. In Israel, this is a day when someone like myself would attend a series of memorial services with our friends and the families of the fallen. This year, we had to find a way to help members observe the day in a way that was both authentic and healing. We created a supportive environment for members to share their stories. Our members told her personal stories at events with 12 different Israeli hi-tech companies. Some, like myself, participated in virtual events with our friends around the world. Together with Ohad Roisblatt, also a commander from Operation Protection Edge, we reached over 21k views online, giving all participants a meaningful and different Memorial Day. It was so successful, particularly since many of these stories have been hard for people to speak about, that we are instituting a public speaking seminar to take the idea to the next step. We will be learning professional skills with the added benefit of creating a healing environment. Win-win no matter how you look at it.
